Start with what you use least
Books you are not reading, spare bedding and occasional-use kitchenware are good places to begin. Keep everyday items available until nearer the move. Finish one small area at a time so you do not end up with half-packed boxes in every room.
Set aside anything you do not want moved. Use a clearly marked space and tell everyone helping with the packing what it means.
Match the box to the contents
Use sound boxes with secure bases. Heavy items belong in smaller boxes, not one large box that becomes difficult to handle. Pack lighter belongings in larger containers and avoid leaving items loose at the top.
Do not overfill a box so the lid cannot close. Fill empty spaces with suitable packing material to reduce movement, without compressing delicate contents. Keep liquids upright and separate from items they could damage.
Give fragile belongings their own attention
Wrap delicate pieces individually and keep hard surfaces from touching. Plates, glasses and ornaments need appropriate cushioning and a box that can support their weight. A “fragile” label helps identify the contents; it does not replace protective packing.
For valuable artwork, unusually delicate items or specialist equipment, ask about the handling and cover before packing them yourself. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions where packaging or transport requirements are specific.
Label for the destination
Write the destination room on the top and a side of each box. Add a short description, such as “bedroom 2 — books”, rather than a detailed list of valuable contents.
Use the same room names at the new home. If there are several bedrooms, number them on a simple plan. Mark the boxes you need first, but keep your day-to-day essentials with you.
Leave time for furniture and appliances
Empty furniture where needed and keep removable fixings together in a labelled bag. Ask DNE before assuming any dismantling or assembly is included. Do not disconnect gas or electrical installations yourself unless you are appropriately qualified; arrange the required work separately.
