As soon as the move looks likely
Make one place for the information: a notebook, shared document or folder is enough. Record the two addresses, contacts, likely dates and questions that need an answer.
Get removal quotes early, but explain if the date is provisional. Ask how a booking is confirmed and what happens if the date changes. An estimate is not a reserved vehicle.
Walk through each room and decide what will move, stay or go. Include the garage, shed and stored belongings. Taking less to the new home is easier when the decision happens before packing starts.
Once the date is agreed
- Confirm the removal scope, price, arrival arrangements and contact numbers.
- Check parking and any building or lift booking at both addresses.
- Arrange the change of address with the organisations you use.
- Plan how children and pets will stay clear of loading areas.
- Agree who will carry keys, medication, valuables and essential paperwork.
- Check arrangements for appliances with the appropriate qualified person.
Start packing rooms and cupboards you use least. Label the top and one side of each box with the destination room and a short description.
In the final week
Send DNE any changes to the inventory or access. Confirm when keys will be available and who will receive the delivery. A final check is especially useful if another person is handling the new property.
Prepare a separate essentials bag. Keep chargers, toiletries, clean clothes, refreshments and basic cleaning supplies accessible. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for preparing appliances; do not leave draining or defrosting until the van arrives.
On moving day
Take meter readings where appropriate and keep a record for yourself. Walk through the property with the team, identify anything that must stay, and point out the items needing particular care.
Before leaving, check cupboards, outdoor storage and the space behind doors. Make sure everyone knows the destination and the contact number for arrival.
At the new property, use your room labels to direct the load. Check the agreed work before the team leaves and raise any concern promptly through the contact in your booking.
Keep the checklist yours
A rented flat, an office and a family home have different handovers. Add your own deadlines rather than treating a generic checklist as the final plan.
Next: packing for a move, moving-day essentials or request a removal quote.
