Why a bedroom count is only a starting point
Two three-bedroom homes can contain very different amounts of furniture. One may have a full garage and a garden set; the other may be lightly furnished. The space needed in the vehicle and the handling involved depend on the belongings, not just the property description.
Send a room-by-room inventory and photographs of larger items. Estimate the box count, and explain if it is still changing. Honest detail is more useful than trying to make the move sound smaller.
The main parts of the assessment
The load. Furniture, boxes, appliances, delicate items and anything unusually heavy or oversized.
The access. Stairs, lifts, narrow entrances, distance to the vehicle and parking arrangements at both properties.
The journey. Collection and delivery locations, additional stops and the timing needed at each end.
The agreed work. Transport and handling are different from packing, disconnection, dismantling, reassembly or clearance. Specify the help you are asking for.
The schedule. A fixed handover window, provisional date or possible key delay needs to be discussed before booking.
Compare the same job
Send the same inventory and access information to each company. A lower figure is difficult to judge if one quote assumes everything is packed downstairs and another includes more work.
Ask for a written description of the included tasks, any excluded charges, payment arrangements and the process if the date or load changes. Check the relevant insurance details and what responsibilities remain with you.

Ways to make the job clearer
Decide what you are keeping before the final quote. Arrange suitable access and have the agreed preparation completed. Tell the company about problems early rather than leaving them to be discovered on the day.
Do not reduce the inventory to get a smaller initial estimate. Extra items still need moving, and the vehicle and time must be suitable for the actual job.
