Start at the kerb and work towards the door
Look for a practical loading position, then walk the route to the property. Note steps, narrow gates, steep paths and the distance involved. A convenient space on a map may be separated from the entrance by a locked gate.
Share photographs and describe the carrying route in your enquiry. If the location has a height or weight restriction, tell DNE before vehicle arrangements are agreed.
Read the signs
Check the restrictions on the street and speak to the authority that manages it if permission may be needed. Do not rely on a neighbour saying that removals vans usually stop there.
In London, some roads are managed by TfL and others by boroughs. TfL’s public loading guidance explains loading on red routes. Rules and permissions depend on the location; moving house is not a general exemption.
Agree who will arrange any permission or parking suspension and pass the confirmation to DNE. Allow time for the authority’s process rather than assuming a same-day request will be possible.
Check private parking separately
A residents’ car park or shared driveway may need permission from a managing agent, landlord or owner. Find out whether a barrier must be opened, whether there are vehicle limits and who can provide access.
Do not use cones or block a public space as a substitute for permission. If the nearest suitable loading point is further away, explain that when obtaining the quote.
Include the delivery address
People often know their current home better than the new one. Ask the seller, agent or building manager for access details if you cannot visit. Check the entrance, floors, lift and parking, not just the postcode.
For offices, ask whether the loading bay has to be booked and whether it can accommodate the proposed move window.
Send the information as one note
Give DNE the proposed stopping position, restrictions, permission arrangements, carrying distance and contact for access. Mention anything still unresolved.
